| February 1987...visiting my grandparents in Florida. We went to the Yankees spring training complex in Ft Lauderdale. It was before actual games started and was just pitchers, catchers, and a few position players around. I wasn't a Yankees fan, but my grandfather was. I spent most of the day trying to get autographs from Ron Guidry, Dave Righetti, etc. After the morning workout, George Steinbrenner walked near the stands where just a few fans were. He was talking baseball as much as he was signing autographs. When I handed him my Yankees yearbook to sign, he asked this wide-eyed 6th grader about school - about my favorite subjects and how I was doing in them. What struck me the most about that brief chat was how interested he was in us. How he said something to the affect of thanks for being a Yankees fan and keep your grades up. I know the way he treated kids was very different from how he treated employees during that time. But, when he wanted to be, Mr. Steinbrenner was an incredibly decent person. I'm glad I got to experience his good side when I met him albeit briefly. |

I met him briefly, too. He asked me what my name was and I said "George, just like you." I must have been about 13 at the time and thought I was very clever. This was some time in the late 1970s, when the Yankees played some exhibition games against the North Carolina baseball squad. Needless to say, it was a pretty big deal in Chapel Hill. _________________ George
